NEW PAINTING - TWO LEGGINGS OF THE CROW

Chief Two Leggings
(1844-1923)
Warriors Citation
For many Crow warriors during the Plains wars, it was a small jump from stealing Sioux horses to scouting for the U.S. Army against them. Two Leggings, like Curly and White-Man-Runs-Him, became a well-known scout for General George Armstrong Custer.
Born along the Bighorn River in Montana, Two Leggings was a member of the Crows' Uxarache clan. His life story was told to William Wildschut, a Montana businessman, between 1919 and 1923. Two Leggings died at home in Hardin, Montana.

Native American Maiden

Mourning Dove Salish 1888-1936
Children were encouraged to develop strict discipline and a high regard for sharing. When a girl picked her first berries and dug her first roots, they were given away to an elder so she would share her future success. When a child carried water for the home, an elder would give compliments, pretending to taste meat in water carried by a boy or berries in that of a girl. The child was encouraged not to be lazy and to grow straight like a sapling.

FAST ELK OF THE SIOUX - HIS VISION

I have created this new painting of Fast Elk - His Vision, these are the words that come to me when I ponder his image.
"As we look into the face of the setting sun we are moved to tears for the plight of this our Great Nation. We who are the keepers of the treasures of Mother Earth have forgotten the ways of our Ancestors, to take only that which we need and to give thanks, to respect the old ways. The cries of Mother Earth and its peoples go unheeded, everything we do is linked and effects the Universe. We are responsible, surely we must act before all that we once held precious is lost
forever, only in this way will we find peace."
